Frequently Asked Questions
when Purchasing Texel Breeding Stock
How do deposits work?
A $400 deposit reserves one Texel sheep.
Examples:
Want 3 ewes? Place 3 deposits.
Want a starter flock with 1 ram and 5 ewes? Place 6 deposits.
When I receive your deposit, you are added to the selection list. Buyers choose sheep in the order deposits are received.
Your deposit applies toward the purchase price of the sheep you select.
How much do Texels cost?
Each sheep is priced based on:
Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs)
Physical traits
For reference, 2025 prices were:
Ewes: $800–$950
Ram lambs: $800–$1,500
These prices are provided as a guide only and do not guarantee future pricing. Prices may increase in future years due to rising costs.
Do I have to pay the full purchase price now?
No. Your deposit simply reserves your place on the selection list. The remaining balance is due when you pick up your sheep.
When will performance data be available?
By mid-September, performance data will be available for every lamb.
This includes:
Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs)
Ultrasound loin eye and fat depth measurements
Current weights
When can sheep be picked up?
Sheep are typically ready to leave the farm in mid-September.
What health paperwork is included?
For sheep leaving Wisconsin, I will provide a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health certificate) at no additional cost if sheep are picked up by October 15.
What if my state requires additional testing?
Some states require additional testing before sheep can enter.
For example, rams over 6 months of age may require Brucella Ovis testing. (Some rams will be over 6 months old mid-September; many will be under 6 months old).
Any state-required testing is the buyer's responsibility unless results come back unfavorable.
Can I request a breeding soundness exam?
Yes. Breeding soundness exams are available at the buyer's expense.
If you would like one performed, please let me know as early as possible so multiple sheep can be tested during the same veterinary visit and costs can be reduced.
Do you provide transportation?
No. Transportation is the buyer's responsibility.
If multiple buyers are traveling in the same direction, I am happy to connect people when possible to help coordinate transportation.
Are the sheep registered?
All sheep are purebred Texels.
Registration certificates are available and included at no additional cost.
Even if you plan to use a ram as a terminal sire, I recommend taking the registration papers. Registered sheep typically have greater resale value when it is time to sell them.
Can I see pictures before making my selections?
Yes. I am happy to send photos of sheep you are interested in.
